Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Huntsville has been designated as a Jubilee Shrine for the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama’s Marian Year. The Marian year, May 13, 2017 through May 13, 2018, was declared in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in Fatima, Portugal. As a Jubilee Shrine, all Pilgrims, upon fulfilling ordinary requirements, may obtain a plenary indulgence as granted by the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary.

An indulgence is the remission before God of temporal punishment due to sin, for sins that have already been forgiven. Thus, it accelerates our purification from the effects of sin and so shortens (or cancels, in the case of a plenary indulgence) the time we would otherwise have to spend in Purgatory after we die.
